Your 2nd Brain

Did you know that your gut is considered your “second brain” and serves as more than just a means for digesting food? It may sound surprising, but our bodies’ complex and enigmatic gut has a great deal of power. Let’s set off on an adventure through the gut, discovering its fascinating role in our overall well-being and unraveling the puzzles of its “second brain” status.

Gut 101: Essential Things to Know

01. Gut Microbiota: The Hidden Heroes

Did you know that your gut is a home to a bustling city of microbes? Imagine exploring into a bright and wild jungle and yes! Hello and welcome to the “gut jungle”, where you may find trillions of tiny creatures called gut microbiota which create a bustling ecosystem. The gut microbiota is a diverse community of bacteria, viruses, and fungi which coexist and working together to keep our gut healthy and happy. A study by Thursby and Juge (2017) stated that the gut microbiota has a symbiotic relationship with the human body and it helps with various essential functions including digestion and nutrient absorption, immune function, metabolism and energy balance, gut barrier function, and neurological function.

02. The Gut-Brain Tango

As we venture deeper into the “gut jungle”, we stumble upon an astounding discovery – A sophisticated communication system known as the enteric nervous system (ENS). The gut has its own intricate network of neurons, neurotransmitters, and receptors and it is connected to the brain via a bidirectional communication pathway known as the gut-brain axis, indicating that gut health has the capacity to influence our mental well-being and vice versa (Carabotti et al., 2015) – It’s as if there’s a brain within a brain!

As our adventure unfolds, we witness an enthralling dance between the gut and the brain. The gut sends messages to the brain, influencing our thoughts, emotions, and even our behavior; the ENS communicates with our primary brain, sending signals via the vagus nerve which creates an intriguing link between our gut and emotions, explaining those “butterflies” or “gut feelings” we encounter – What a solid bond, isn’t it? Also, it is mentioned in a study by Carabotti et al. (2015) that the bidirectional communication between the gut and the brain is influenced by the microbiome.

03. The Gut Guardian: Immunity Superpowers

Unbeknownst to many, our gut is also a superhero in the realm of immunity – Yes, the gut is closely intertwined with the immune system. The gut microbiota work hand in hand to keep us safe from harmful invaders, contributing to overall immune function. According to a study by Wiertsema et al. (2021), approximately 70-80% of our immune cells reside in the gut – to be more specific in the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT). A healthy gut microbiota trains and educates our immune cells, giving them the ability to fight off infections and remain vigilant against illnesses. Hence, our gut is truly our unsung hero.

04. The Continuation of Gut Adventure: Gut-Brain Disorders

As comparable to a phrase “life isn’t all sunshine and rainbows”, even this extraordinary adventure in our gut has its challenges. What is the main challenge? – Dysbiosis, or to be more precise, the imbalance or the disruption in the composition and function of the gut microbiota. Dysbiosis leads to gut-brain disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), leaky gut syndrome or may be impactful to mental health such as anxiety and depression (Mitrea et al., 2022; Clapp et el., 2017). But worry not, there are many ways that enable us to restore balance and bring harmony back to our gut.

The End of The Adventure: Becoming a Gut Hero

Good news, then! We have the ability to unleash the gut’s enormous potential by becoming our own personal gut heroes. Let's investigate how we might set out on a quest to transform into gut heroes and transform our health! We must learn how to take care of and maintain our gut health if we want to be gut heroes. Here are the ways:
Eat a diverse range of foods
Eat lots of vegetables, legumes, beans, and fruits
Eat fermented foods
Eat prebiotic foods
Eat whole grains
Increase your intake of probiotics
Get enough rest or sleep
Manage stress appropriately
Prioritise exercise
That is all for our second brain adventure! As we bid farewell to our gut adventure, we would like you to reflect on the mind-blowing power of this second brain inside of us. Our gut, with its magnificent gut microbiota as well as enteric nervous system (ENS) are capable of impacting our mood, immune system, and overall well-being. We may unleash our gut's full potential and set off on a voyage of health, happiness, and fascinating discoveries by adopting a “gut hero” lifestyle. So, are you ready to become a gut hero and embark on your own incredible gut adventure?
